Famous People and Their Cigars
It’s a tradition in American history. Those who can afford the finest whiskeys appreciate the complement of the world’s premium cigars. And, for those who have accomplished much in their lives, this potent combination has been the key to their success. Surely, if Caesar had puffed on a Cohiba while sipping Jack Daniels, the Roman Empire would not have fallen. These illustrious men and women know better.
Winston Churchill + Cuban Cigars (esp. Romeo y Julieta)
*stored 3,000-4,000 cigars at his home in Kent
*once called “Cigarface”
*smoked 8-10 cigars everyday
Fidel Castro + Cuban Cigars (esp. Cohiba Corona Especial)
*Even after quitting for health reasons, he continues to smoke his favorite cigar in his dreams. And after notable victories. And significant setbacks.
George Burns + El Producto
*"If I paid ten dollars for a cigar, first I'd make love to it, then I'd smoke it."
*Burns, at a 10-cigar-a-day minimum, was blessed (lucky?) enough to attend the funeral of the doctor who advised him to quit smoking for his own good.
Whoopi Goldberg + 80 Aniversario (Cuban Davidoff)
*Her real name is Caryn Johnson; “Whoopi” was made up to fit her personality.
*She was a grandmother before she hit 40
*She never smokes more than one cigar a day
Alphones Capone + Smaller cigars (he wasn’t picky)
*The Chicago crime boss actually saw himself as a benefactor of thousands
*Started his illustrious career in two gangs: the Brooklyn Rippers and Forty Theives Junior
*Lit a cigar on his way to custody after losing an appeal on tax evasion charges in 1932
Why are Cuban cigars so special?
The tobacco. Grown in an ideal climate in Pinar del Rio Province, Cuba, the high-quality tobacco leaves are harvested, cured (aged in a delicate balance of heat and shade), fermented (allowed to die and mature in a controlled environment designed to prevent rot) and, for the most part, hand-rolled. Popular brands include Cohiba, H. Upmann, and Trinidad.
